Abstract

The existing hypertext systems have following problems : First, users might lose their location and direction in a hypertext. Second, users frequently fail to get information even though the hypertext system has the information they want to get as they do not have enough knowledge to navigate the system.
To solve these problems, a hypertext system that is argumented with the information retrieval function was proposed. The system can adapt itself by the user model which is set up by the characteristics of its user. A beginner can navigate it easily by following a pre-defined path. The expert user can be free from tedious information. We call the function as a guider which is a sort of an agent. The guider holds knowledge including user information and system navigation information about user models and a dictionary with synonym, antonym, abbreviation, jargon, and dialect. The guider can acquire the needed information to access the system or to interact with a user. Moreover, by using book metaphor-based browsing environment, this system has the potential to prevent
disorientation and reduce cognitive overhead of users.
